my PRODUCT TEam

Watson Classroom

Watson Classroom is a set of products which help teachers plan (Enlight) and engage (Element) with their students. A more descriptive version of what our focus is can be found on the website.

Enlight

I've had the opportunity to work on Enlight since September 2015 when all we had were our first set of hills to work with. Enlight is a planning tool that gives teachers actionable insights about their students as well as curated personalized learning content. We strive to give teachers an understanding of what's going on with students in and outside of the classroom so they can reach their students more effectively.

Element

Until recently there were two design teams split between Enlight and Element, our iOS application. In an effort to align them both, we merged the two teams and I am now designing for both products simultaneously. While Enlight is a planning tool, Element helps teachers engage with students because of its portable nature. It's easy to move around the classroom and update student information and performance within the context of completing their daily tasks.

My Role

  • Research: I assist in conducting user interviews and observe/shadow teachers. I am also expected to be well versed in IBM Design Thinking activities so that I can use them to create user centric designs.

  • Wireframes: I create low, mid, and high fidelity wireframes which show all states of a design. I believe there should be a high data fidelity at all times, otherwise wireframes are just layouts.

  • Prototypes: I've created prototypes in Adobe XD but prefer Invision to communicate designs. I create prototypes for user testing, presenting to our school districts, four our sales team, and for our development team on a weekly basis.

  • UX Patterns: I led the effort of defining and documenting our UX Patterns.

  • Design Documentation: I write and present detailed acceptance criteria to communicate how a design should function, what data is needed, and how the data will be used.

  • Data Driven Design: I work closely with our data scientist, data architect, and our development team to understand the technology/data available and catch potential problems that could come up in development to nip them in the bud.

  • Client Playbacks: I create the presentations and present the design perspective at monthly playbacks to our school districts.

  • Workshops: I organize and facilitate workshops both client facing and internal which utilize design thinking activities to produce user driven insights.
